Small Grants for FLAGS members
FLAGS is providing more benefits to its members. In order to help its members participate in community-based language activities with their students, they have created two grants. Each grant supports your participation in a different community-based language activity.
Sacramento County Fair small grant to enter student work
The second small grant will defray the costs of entering student work in the Sacramento County Fair by reimbursing teachers for the per-student entry fee for up to 10 students (currently $2 per student). Please note the following:
- Teachers must be CURRENT MEMBERS OF FLAGS to be eligible. If your membership is not current, you can renew or join now. Membership forms are available at the "membership" link on the left of this page.
- Teachers must complete the online grant application for this grant in order to be eligible.
- We will only reimburse for entries submitted by the deadline established by the Sacramento County Fair. This deadline will also be publicized on the FLAGS Web site once it is known. We will not reimburse late entries!

Read Around The World small grant: 2010-2011 application now closed
The first grant is designed to help teachers participate in Read Around the World, a program in which language students (and those who speak a language other than English at home) select a children's story to read during a special story hour at their local public library. Teachers help the students select a story that will be engaging, develop a fun pre-reading activity to get the young audience excited and prepared for the story, use props such as puppets or felt board while telling the story, and create a fun "take-away" item, such as a coloring page related to the story. In essence, the students use the same strategies that we use as teachers to make the story fun and accessible to their young audience.
- Complete the online application (see below)
- Attend a training event about Read Around the World with the program organizer (Nicole Naditz);
- Provide Nicole with the date, time, and library branch location during which the Read Around the World session will take place (teachers who participated in Read Around the World in a previous year are exempt from this requirement);
- Keep and submit receipts for purchases being submitted for reimbursement up to the maximum amount of $50;
- Submit photographic or video proof that the Read Around the World event took place as scheduled at the public library branch the teacher selected. Please note that we may use the photos and/or video in future publicity about this program. The information packet you will receive includes a photo/video release form that must be completed by all participating students and signed by their parents.
Please download an information packet here before proceding with the grant application below. Note: you may need to "allow script" to run in order to view and complete this application. Check for a beige bar across the top of this page that says "click here...".
