FLAGS Board Member Christine Lanphere to receive the Chevalier des Palmes Académiques

Christine Lanphere, 2007 National Language Teacher of the Year and member of the FLAGS board, was recently named a Chevalier des Palmes Académiques for her accomplishments and contributions to the teaching of French. An official awards ceremony will be announced at a later date.

FLAGS Board Member Nicole Naditz receives 2010 Jane Ortner Educating through Music Award

Nicole Naditz, French teacher at Bella Vista High School and member of the FLAGS Board, was chosen as the grand-prize winner of the Jane Ortner Educating through Music Award competition. This program, sponsored by the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, invites teachers of all subjects and grade levels to submit curriculum resources for the inclusion of music to meet their content standards. Nicole's submission, "Note-worthy language: using music to support the world language content standards" was selected as the grand-prize winner and will be featured on the Grammy Museum's educational page of their web site. Nicole also received two tickets to attend the 2011 Grammy Awards in Los Angeles.

San Juan District to open its first Dual Immersion Program


Officials at San Juan Unified School District that they will offer
two dual immersion kindergarten classes at Edison Elementary
beginning in fall 2010. The classes will spend half of their day
learning content in English, and the other half of the day will be
taught exclusively in Spanish. The program will continue as the
students move up into subsequent grades.


24-hour webcast in honor of Discover Languages Month a huge
success: and possibly a world record!


From Feb. 22-23, 2011, students at Bella Vista High School once again spent 24 hours advocating for
world language study. The program featured interviews,
performances, research, literature and news highlights drawing
attention to the benefits and importance of developing a
multi-lingual citizenry. You can view recorded segments from the
webcast at http://www.ustream.com. Search for "Discover
Languages" to find the channel where the videos are saved. Check back to see if the webcast is granted world record status by Guinness World Records as the "longest, live, scripted webcast".
